What Can I Do If My Rights Were Violated?

What is a rights violation or unfair treatment?

A rights violation or unfair treatment could include a situation in which you think that police:

Broke the law.
Violated your Charter rights.
Lied to you about why they were detaining or arresting you.
Discriminated against you on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity, disability, or otherwise.
Treated you in a way that was disrespectful or inappropriate in the circumstances.

Your rights may have been violated if:

Police stopped and questioned you because you are Black or Indigenous.

Police treated you poorly because you have a mental disability.

Police singled you out and gave you a ticket because you are 2SLGBTQI+.
