Your rights if detained or arrested

Right to know the reason for the detention or arrest

Section 10(a) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms says:

Everyone has the right on arrest or detention “to be informed promptly of the reasons therefor”.

The police officer must tell you why you were arrested in clear and simple language. Police cannot lie about the reason for the detention or arrest.
